Youngsters among our vast readership may not recognize the reference in the title. It's to a line in Richard Nixon's "Checkers" speech, that saved his place as VP on the 1952 Eisenhower ticket. The passage in question was:
I should say this, that Pat doesn't have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat, and I always tell her she'd look good in anything.
We were reminded of it when we saw this article in Vanity Fair.
Ah, for the good old days.
