Adding Insult to Injury

Republicans are caricatures of themselves:

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

The article here.

Tidal Surge Heads for McCain

I have no evidence to support this, but I'm suspecting the press is feeling a little responsible (as well they should) for the disaster that is the Bush Administration. When the Bush campaign told lies about Kerry, they didn't report, "This is a lie!" They said, "Democrats contested the allegation."

The result? Well, you know the results.

But there's some evidence the press understands this country is in too deep of a hole to let the next President be chosen based on lies. Thus, this article from the Associated Press:

WASHINGTON (AP) — The "Straight Talk Express" has detoured into doublespeak.

Republican presidential nominee John McCain, a self-proclaimed tell-it-like-it-is maverick, keeps saying his running mate, Sarah Palin, killed the federally funded Bridge to Nowhere when, in fact, she pulled her support only after the project became a political embarrassment. He accuses Democrat Barack Obama of calling Palin a pig, which did not happen. He says Obama would raise nearly everyone's taxes, when independent groups say 80 percent of families would get tax cuts instead.

Even in a political culture accustomed to truth-stretching, McCain's skirting of facts has stood out this week. It has infuriated and flustered Obama's campaign, and campaign pros are watching to see how much voters disregard news reports noting factual holes in the claims.

McCain's persistence in pushing dubious claims is all the more notable because many political insiders consider him one of the greatest living victims of underhanded campaigning. Locked in a tight race with George W. Bush for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000, McCain was rocked in South Carolina by a whisper campaign claiming he had fathered an illegitimate black child and was mentally unstable.

Shaken by the experience, McCain denounced less-than-truthful campaigning. Vowing to live up to his "straight talk" motto, he apologized for his reluctance to criticize the flying of the Confederate flag at South Carolina's state Capitol in a bid for votes. When the so-called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacked the military record of Democrat and fellow Navy officer John Kerry in 2004, McCain called the ads "dishonest and dishonorable."

Now, top aides to McCain include Steve Schmidt, who has close ties to Karl Rove, Bush's premier political adviser in 2000.

Andrew Sabl at The Reality-Based Community did a quick survey of newspaper cartoons and editorials in the swing states of Michigan, Ohio, and Florida. Every example he found was dismissive of McCain/Palin.

A Man with a Plan

By all means, read the whole article by Adam Nagourney and Jeff Zeleny. But I like the confidence:

Mr. Obama’s aides said they were confident with the course of the campaign. They said that, other than making some shifts around the edges, particularly in response to Mr. McCain’s effort to seize the change issue from Mr. Obama, they were not planning any major deviation from a strategy that called for a steady escalation of attacks on Mr. McCain as the race heads toward the debates.

That response is characteristic for a campaign that has presented itself as disciplined and unflappable and is reminiscent of the way Mr. Obama’s campaign reacted a year ago when it came under fire from allies who said it was not being tough enough in going after Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“We’re sensitive to the fluid dynamics of the campaign, but we have a game plan and a strategy,” said Mr. Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe. “We’re familiar with this. And I’m sure between now and Nov. 4 there will be another period of hand-wringing and bed-wetting. It comes with the territory.”

Let's Not Let This Die

This ran on ABC yesterday:

Stay Calm

Obama's team was not prepared for McCain's selection of Palin. They wouldn't have been prepared if he had selected Tinkerbell, either. (No, I will not apologize for the comparison!) It was a game-changer, no doubt about it.

We need to give them a little time to recalibrate. Right now we're terrified that McCain's poll numbers will just keep increasing. But that's not the way it has ever happened before. Polls go up, and polls go down. It's not just me saying that. David Broder says so. Gail Collins says so.

What can we do to help win this thing? If you can afford it (and haven't maxed out already), send Obama money.

Gallup

Two days ago the Gallup Daily Tracking Poll, which averages the 3 most recent day's results, showed McCain at 46% vs. Obama's 44%. Up 'til then, Obama had been in the lead, or sometimes tied.

Today, the poll is reflecting Obama at 48% and McCain at 42%. Gallup attributes the sharp turnaround to a "convention bounce," which, in an earlier article, they say averages about 5%. It's worth noting that one of the 3 days covered by the poll included Hillary's speech, but none reflected Bill's or Biden's speech.

At the end of July, Obama had one 3-day average of 49%, with McCain at 40%, but that's about as far apart as they've been. Can Obama push it over 50%? We'll be watching here.
