Joao Silva Update

The earlier vagueness about the extent of Joao Silva's injuries led me to anticipate this: Silva lost both legs when a land mine exploded under him in Afghanistan. He was a "contract photographer" for the Times, which means the Times is probably contractually not responsible for him from now on. Thus, the fund raisers. Welcome to the Reagan Revolution. [Update: See Chip's comment, below.]

Here are the pictures Silva took just before – and after! – the explosion. And a video of his recovery, which is going well.

Interestingly the Times "Lens" coeditor David W. Dunlap had this to say in the comments section below the photographs. "The term "contractor" is used in this instance to distinguish Mr. Silva from a staff photographer or a freelancer. The Times has told the Pentagon that it will be responsible for his treatment and care, and is assisting his family in other ways." It looks like they have not abandoned Mr. Silva. I wish him well and hope to see him bringing us his amazing images from the field soon.

Thanks for spotting that, Chip. I appreciate the correction.

No, really.

I did not mean it as a "correction." Really. :)

There's nothing wrong with a correction. The NY Times does it every day. People who appreciate accuracy appreciate corrections. Fox News does not, for example.
