Dr. Strangelove (1964)

It's not really on anybody's radar these days, what with the recession and all, but via Crooks and Liars, here's a fascinating time-lapse video showing where all 2,053 nuclear explosions have occurred since World War II. As bluegal suggests, watch the world light up in the early 1960s. Fun times.

Don't let the 7-minute run time scare you; despite the modern world's efforts to the contrary, you still have an attention span that long. And it's so fascinating that you'll loose track of the time.

This popped up a few months ago, and I remember trying to figure out just why it was necessary for the US to test over 1000 nukes, and the USSR to come close. I mean, sure, some of it was to intimidate each other, and some was legitimately trying to see if a new design worked... but 1000?

Also, man, we really are assholes. We nuke the crap out of a few islands in the pacific, the French test their nukes in colonial Africa, the USSR did a lot of testing in the poorer Soviet Republics... I'm sure the inhabitants really appreciated it.
